Obsidian Scholars

A Black Youth Leadership Development Initiative

Gateway Educational Services was founded by two Black/African American women. Our Black Youth Leadership development program is dedicated to advancing the educational opportunities of Black youth in Santa Barbara County. This program integrates social & emotional development through arts and culture alongside academic achievement.

How we operate

Our Program

Obsidian Scholars is October through May, with monthly gatherings on Saturdays. Specific dates are TBA. Through arts-based learning and culturally rooted experiences, participants develop leadership skills, deepen their sense of identity, and contribute positively to their communities. This work is about more than programming—it is about nurturing the next generation of creative thinkers, cultural leaders, and change-makers. Gatherings include field trips to places like the California African American Museum, visiting Charles Drew University, and much more. (Grades 4-8)
